The Zovii ZV10 on review here is designed to slide fully over a motorcycle’s brake disc, and thanks to its solid construction offers good levels of protection with only the usual vulnerability…

Pros & Cons

Pros
  • Very good value

  • Double-locking

  • Highly resistant to direct attack

Cons
  • Suffers the same vulnerability as most other disc locks

Size and weight

Weighing 503g, the Zovii ZV10 has what’s described as a hardened alloy cast body, but more importantly the carbide-reinforced locking pin, which measures 9.80mm in diameter, secures in the top and the bottom of the body. This does mean you need the key inserted to lock it, but it keeps the two sides tied together, making a huge difference to its resistance to attack.

Resistance to attack: lock picking

While some YouTube channels might make lock picking look easy, especially when selling the creator’s own tools, it’s not a method used in typical motorcycle thefts at all. Theoretically the Zovii ZV10 could be picked with the right tools, skill and time, but an angle-grinder attack is far more likely.

Resistance to attack: drill

Thanks to a hardened steel, free-spinning cover plate, attempting to drill the ZV10’s barrel proved fruitless. Given the relatively low price of this lock it’s an impressive result.

Resistance to attack: hammer

Despite repeated blows with a lump hammer, the Zovii ZV10 would not yield. Even using a bolster chisel at the weakest points failed to do anything more than dent the metal.

Pry attacks also failed, partly thanks to the double-locked pin that keeps both sides of the body securely tied together.

I also tried splitting the lock with a tapered screw extractor, but again had no success.

The ZV10 offers very good resistance to even brutal impact and pry attacks.

Resistance to attack: angle-grinder

The design of the Zovii ZV10 means the two ‘arms’ are the obvious points of attack. The pin isn’t accessible enough, but it is of course possible to cut the body. Still, even with a quality, thin cutting disc, this was a time-consuming process.

Unfortunately most disc locks suffer the same vulnerability in that the brake disc itself is much quicker and easier to cut. Not all thieves will be willing to sacrifice the disc, but it’s important to understand that it is a potential form of attack.

Zovii ZV10 review: Verdict

At just £22.99, the Zovii ZV10 offers excellent value for money. Besides the vulnerability that all motorcycle disc locks suffer, this provides very good protection against all common forms of attack, and should be considered a great deterrent on its own, or a very credible addition to a layered security approach.
