Buell SuperTouring 1190 to launch new era of revived US brand

Newly-revived Buell Motorcycles has announced it will be pulling the wraps off its first new-from-the-ground-up motorcycles since its relaunch by unveiling the SuperTouring 1190 and Baja DR dirtbike at Daytona Bike Week.

One of the few American marques beyond Harley-Davidson to make an impact globally, Buell has made a habit of collapsing and being resurrected over the past 15 years, most recently in November 2021 when it was revived with fresh owners and investment.

While the first model to roll off the production line was the restyled 1190 RX sportsbike - now dubbed the ‘Hammerhead’ - it is the SuperTouring 1190 that marks a brave new era for the manufacturer that developed a reputation in its heyday for quirkier models.

Indeed, the SuperTouring 1190 appears to subscribe to this throwback image if the production version bears any resemblance to some moody renders that were revealed by Buell 12 months ago.

With its boxy and rugged profile, while the SuperTouring 1190 isn’t an off-roader, its adventure motorcycle appearance will likely see it revive an all-American rivalry with the Harley-Davidson Pan America.

Buell is also touting it as the world’s fastest touring bike with a 185hp 1190cc V-twin engine, plus variable mounting points for hard or soft bags, and room for rider customisation with aftermarket touring accessories. Prices will start from $21,995, though it is unclear whether Buell plans to begin importing to Europe soon.

With the covers coming off on 5 March at Daytona Bike Week, the SuperTouring 1190 will be joined by another all-new model in the Baja DR (Dune Racer) dirtbike.

Boasting a 72-degree V-twin 175hp version of the 1190cc engine, will be the world’s fastest production dirt bike as Buell moves into the lucrative off-road market for the first time.

“This is a pivotal moment for American motorcycles and really puts Buell on the map. We are on track to build the world’s fastest and solely American-built production off-road bike,” said Bill Melvin, CEO of Buell Motorcycle Co. adding.

“Less than 1% of the world is covered with pavement, the Buell Baja DR is designed to dominate the other 99.7%. It will give riders the freedom to go anywhere in the world, faster and with more power, harnessing our 1190 engine.

“The Buell Baja DR is a beast, elevating the brand to even greater heights, and will bring passion back for American-built motorcycles.”
